GREENEVILLE - The Cleveland State baseball team put a pair of marks in the win column on Tuesday afternoon as they traveled to Tusculum College for a twinbill with the Pioneers. The Cougars banged out 13 hits in game one to take a 7-3 win and then made the most of their only two hits in game two to complete the sweep in game two with a close 1-0 win.

The Pioneers circled the wagons in their first turn at the plate in game one and put a pair of runs on the board as Vinny Ferrera doubled in a run and Patrick Shultz singled in another for a quick 2-0 lead.

The Cougars took the lead with a four-spot in the third. Three errors aided the visitors greatly while Chase Edwards singled in a run and Jared Davis plated two more with a single of his own to help his team to a 4-2 lead.

The Pioneers got a run closer in the bottom of the fifth as Andrew Bowerman singled and came around to score on a Cougar miscue, cutting the lead to 4-3.

Cleveland State then tacked on three big insurance runs in the top of the sixth to secure the win. Stephen Collum singled and stole second to start the rally and then scored on a single from Evan Speicher while Edwards and Dalton Rogers knocked in a run each.

Ethan Davis tossed five innings for the Cougars (19-13) to get the win while Jeb Scoggins and Haydn Bailey tossed an inning each in relief. Griffen Ebel took the loss for the Pioneers while Eddie Perkins, John Clarke and Josh Jarro all pitched in relief.

Game two was all pitching as Tyler Kilgore for the Cougars and the Pioneers' Zach Slagle took turns putting zeros on the board with relative ease for much of the game.

Finally, the Cougars were able to scratch out a run in the top of the seventh. Jared Davis singled to start the rally. Zach Janes then pinch ran for Davis and promptly stole second and moved to third on a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt from Rogers. Cody Hiefnar lifted a fly ball to right field to push the only run of the contest across the plate for a 1-0 lead.

Derek Chandler pitched one inning in relief of Kilgore to pick up the win while Bobby Towne pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to get the save. Jared Davis had the only two hits of the game for the Cougars while Tusculum had six hits.

The Cougars will now turn their attention toward a big Region VII Conference three-game weekend series as Motlow State comes to town on Friday.
