COUGARS AND JAGUARS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER CAT FIGHT
Georgia Perimeter and Cleveland State split their Friday afternoon
doubleheader at Cougar Field with the Cougars holding on to win
game one 6-5 while the Jaguars took game two, 7-3.
The cat fight between the Jaguars and the Cougars went a day early
as they took advantage of the sunshine in advance of the snow
flurries and frigid temperatures forecast for Saturday.
Evan Speicher put the home team on top in the bottom of the first
of game one as he doubled, moved to third on wild pitch and scored
on a grounder by Chase Edwards for a 1-0 lead.
The Jaguars managed to tie the game with a run in the fifth as Matt
Taylor doubled and scored on a groundout. The Cougars then
responded with a four-spot in their half of the fifth. Michael
Hargrove started the rally with a double and scored on a single by
Zach Janes. DeAndre Allen and Speicher followed that with an RBI
single each to push the lead to 5-1.
A two-run dinger to right field by Pierce Ressmeyer an inning later
cut the lead in half and a double from Matt Taylor cut the lead to
5-4. The Cougars got a run back in their half of the sixth as a
pair of walks, a single by Janes and a wild pitch allowed the run
to cross.
Things got a little tight on the home side of the park in the
seventh as the Jaguars loaded the bases on three walks. Russell
Melton scampered home on a wild pitch to once again trim the lead
to one run, but the rally would stop there as the Cougars managed
to record the final out.
Brandon Zajac picked up the win for the Cougars (5-3) while Andre
Wilson got the save. Sam Bragg suffered the loss for the
Jaguars.
Once again the Cougars jumped on top with a run in their first turn
at the dish in game two as Edwards singled in Allen for a 1-0 lead.
But, unlike game one, the Cougars couldn't hold off their guests as
the Jaguars plated four runs in the third and three more in the
fourth. Ressmeyer belted his second homer of the day, this time a
three-run shot to left field in the third while three singles an
error and a groundout plated the three runs in the fourth for a
commanding lead.
The Cougars scratched out a run in the bottom of the third on an
RBI double from Speicher and another in the sixth as Cody Hiefnar
tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hargrove, but it was too
little to late as the Jaguars secured game two.
Jeb Scoggins suffered the loss on the hill for the Cougars, Thomas
Huddleston tossed an inning in relief while Bobby Towne added three
scoreless innings of relief as well. Dustin Beggs picked up the win
for the Jaguars.
The Cougars will travel to Piedmont College on Monday.
