BARNESVILLE, GA — The Cleveland State baseball team loaded
up the big bats for their road trip to Gordon College on Wednesday
afternoon and made quick work of the Highlanders as they pounded
out 15 hits in a 16-3 whitewashing of their hosts.
The Cougars wasted no time as they put a four spot on the board in
their first turn at the dish. Ethan Davis plated the first run of
the day with a groundout. Keith Buckhault followed with a two-run
double and then came around to score on a passed ball for a quick
4-0 lead.
Gordon got a run back in the bottom the first on an RBI double from
Aaron Mizzell and added another in the bottom of the second on a
single from Devin Bonin. The Cougars added a run in the second on a
sacrifice fly from Evan Speicher and then added three more in the
third on two errors, a two-run double by Zach Janes and an RBI
single from J.D. Cowart to push the lead to 8-2.
Cleveland State then put the game completely out of reach with a
six-run outburst in the top of the fourth. DeAndre Allen started
the rally with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Two
Highlander miscues, a pair of plunked batters, a two-run double by
Davis and RBIs from Cowart and Allen completed the rally and pushed
he Cougar lead to 14-2.
Randall Coley joined the Cougar hit parade in the fifth with an RBI
and then singled in another run in the seventh to cap off the
impressive offensive output. Jordan Dyer singled in a run for the
home team in the seventh, but it was too little to late as the
Cougars stopped the rally and picked up the win.
Tyler Kilgore got the win for the Cougars (9-4) while Derek
Chandler, Jeb Scoggins and Andre Wilson all pitched in relief.
Dylan Peppers suffered the loss for Gordon College.
