BASEBALL COUGARS TAKE 2 OF 3 IN WEEKEND SERIES WITH VINCENNES
The Cleveland State baseball team hosted Vincennes University (IN) in a home opening three game weekdn series. On Saturday, the team split a doublehead with the Blazers taking the first game by a 7-5 win and the Cougars taking the nightcap 8-3. On a windy Sunday afternoon, the Cougars belted out 13 hits and took the series by a 11-1 final in seven innings.
In the first game on Saturday, both teams were deadlocked at 3 through five innings. The vistors broke through with four runs in the top of the sixth to hand the Cougars their first loss of the season. Cody Hiefnar had two doubles in the game and was the only Cougar with two hits. Michael Hargrove had a hit to drive in two runs. Zach Janes also tripled. Thomas Huddleston took the loss.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Chase Edwards provided fireworks with three extra base hits. He doubled his first two times at bat and them had a home run in the sixth inning. Evan Speicher had three hits which included a double. Dalton Rogers had two hits and Michael Hargrove had a three run home run in the fourth. Jeb Scoggins would earn the pitching victory throwing six innings, giving up five hits while striking out four and walking one batter.
In the series finale, the Cougars broke the game open up with seven runs in the bottom of the second inning. After Randall Coley and Damo DeMatteo walked to open the inning, DeAndre Allen, Zach Janes and Michael Hargrove singled to plate the first two runs. Jared Davis would then walk to force in the third run before Chase Edwards would launch a pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam. DeAndre Allen and Jared Davis would each bang out three hits for the game, each scoring twice and Davis driving in two runs. Edwards would finish the day with a double to go along with his home run. Evan Speicher also had tow hits in the win. Brandon Zajac picked up the win on the mound throwing five innings, striking out six, walking two, and an unearned run.
