Cougars TCCAA Region 7 Softball Tournament Recap
Cougars Softball needed to win a play-in game to qualify for the TCCAA Region 7 Double Elimination
Tournament and that they did besting Southwest Tennessee 7-5 on Friday, May 2 in a game that was started at the
tournament site, Chattanooga State, and then halted at the end of four innings due to thunder and
lightning.
After a days long wait, the game finished at Frost Stadium in Chattanooga giving the Cougars a berth
in the tournament. The Cougars had 12 hits, two each from Heidi Johnson, Lilly Griffitts, Ava Layne,
Destini Jensen and Milan Pemberton while Layla Pettigrew had one. Of their two hits, Griffitts and
Jensen each had homeruns. Sierra Howard pitched all seven innings for the win.
Back at the tournament venue the Cougars faced off against number two seed Volunteer State on
Monday, May 5 and lost 7-0. With no score going into the fourth inning Volunteer exploded for 7 runs.
On the game Cleveland State managed just two hits with one from Desiree Nance and one from
Pemberton. Howard was tough in the circle giving up just two earned runs.
Back at it again on Tuesday, May 6 and needing to win two games Cleveland State was eliminated in
game one of the day losing 11-1 to Jackson State. The Cougars would only have three hits, a single
and a double by Taylor Hancock and Griffitts respectively, and a solo homerun by Layne.
Cleveland State finished conference play with a 12-16 mark with an overall season record of 17-26.
As a team the Cougars lashed out 34 homeruns while batting .296 with an On Base Percentage of
.349
