COUGARS WIN EXTRA INNING THRILLER; TAKE TWO FROM ROANE STATE
The Cougar baseball team took a doubleheader from the Roane State on Friday afternoon, but they had to work overtime in the first game as they won 3-2 in 11 innings. The second game went the normal seven as they prevailed 5-1 on the strength of Jared Davis' three RBIs.
In the first game, Roane State had a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh, but the Cougars tied it up as Evan Speicher scored on a fielders' choice. In the eleventh inning, Keith Buckhault would lead off with a single. Speicher would sacrifice him to second where he would score the winning run on a single by Chase Edwards.
Buckhault and Edwards would both finish with three hits in the game. Jared Davis would finish with two hits. Brandon Zajac was the starting pitcher. He would pitch the first six innings, giving up six hits while striking out eight and walking four. Derek Chandler and Bobby Towne would pitch five shutout innings with Towne picking up the victory. The two gave up only three hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
In the second game, the Cougars found themselves behind in the first inning, but took the lead with single runs in the bottom of the second and third innings. Zach Janes would drive in Cody Hiefnar in the second and then Speicher would score the go ahead run in the third on a Davis fielder's choice. They put the game out of reach in the sixth as Davis would hit a two run home run over the right field fence and then Janes would knock in Hiefnar to close out the scoring.
Thomas Huddleston would go the sitance on the mound as he surrendered only the one run and four hits. He would strike out eight and walk only one batter. Janes and Buckhault would each have tow hits in the win.
