COUGARS SWEEP UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS
The Cougars got out the broom Wednesday as they swept the University of the Cumberlands junior varsity squad in a doubleheader, 10-4 and 3-1.
Cleveland State used their bats in the first game as they pounded out ten hits, four of them going for extra bases. They saw their visitors take a 1-0 lead in the first before they took the lead with a four run second inning behind RBI hits from Michael Hargrove, DeAndre Allen, Keith Buckhault, and Chase Edwards.
Allen would lead the team with three hits, three runs, and three RBIs in the game. Hargrove and Evan Speicher each would collect two hits; Hargrove scoring twice and Speicher driving in tow runs.
Ethan Davis got credit for the victory on the mound. He worked four innings, surrendering one earned run on five hits while stiking out one.
The second game was for all purposes a pitcher's duel. The Cougars would take a 1-0 lead in the second when Colby Harmon would score on a groundout. The visitors would put two hits and a groundout to tie the score in the top of the third.
The Cougars took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on first and third, J.D. Cowart would score the go ahead run on an errant pickoff move. Zach Janes would move around to third on the error and then score without a pitch being thrown when a balk was called.
Tyler Kilgore would gain the victory as he pitched five strong innings, surrendering just the one earned run on three hits. He would strike out five opposing batters. Jordan Whitmire and Bobby Towne would pitch the final two innings with Towne picking up the save.
Colby Harmon would be the only Cougar with two hits in the contest.
