Having taken a 4-0 lead by the end of the fifth inning, the Cougars (27-12, 10-9) were held scoreless for the remainder of the game, while the Saluqis (7-38, 4-15) scored nine unanswered runs, to win the game 9-4.
"Southwest outplayed us in every phase of today's game," Cleveland State head coach Mike Policastro said. "We will have to find a way to compete (Friday) to get back in the series."
The series continues with a doubleheader, playing at 12 and 2 p.m.
In the bottom of the fifth, Devon Gardner homered to put the Cougars on the board. In the next inning, Trey Vanderpool hit a double and picked up an RBI, while Brandon Mason and John Sharpe each picked up an RBI to make it 4-0.
The Saluqis scored seven runs in the seventh inning and then picked up two more in the eighth inning.
Southwest Tennessee had 13 hits in the game, while Cleveland State had 10.
Billy Brand went 3-for-4 and Vanderpool was 2-for-3. Sean McDermott hit a triple in the game.
Hooper Mills (6-4) took the loss from the mound, throwing six and two-thirds innings.
