COUGARS GARNER AWARDS AT JUCO SUMMER LEAGUE; FOUR NAMED ALL-STARS
This past weekend at the JUCO Summer League tournament, three Cleveland State baseball players were part of their team winning the league championship. In the league's All Star game, those three plus an additional teammate were named to the U.S. All Star team.
Freshman Kegan Frederick (back row in front of field lights) was named top pitcher and sophomore Evan Speicher (kneeling in middle) was named top defensive player. Frederick was the winning pitcher in the championship game which his team won 5-0. He went seven innings for the complete game. He allowed only one hit, struck out six, and walked two batters. Speicher hit .500 in the championship round with 3 hits, 2 runs, and one RBI.
Sophomore Jordan Whitmire (back row to Frederick's left) was the winning pitcher in the semifinal as the team won the game 4-0. He had a complete game as well. He gave up five hits, struck out eight, and walked three batters in his seven innings of work.
Freshman Raunel Perez also was at the league competing for another squad. He was the starting pitcher for his team that lost in the semis 2-1. He threw six innings, surrrendering the two runs on three hits. He struck out 13 batters and walked four in the game.
All four saw action in the All Star Game which team USA won by a 12-7 score. Speicher had a hit, two runs scored, and a RBI in the game. Frederick started the game and went 2 1/3 innings. He gave up two earned runs on tow hits with three strikeouts. Whitmire came on in relief to throw 1 2/3 innings. He gave an earned run on one hit and two walks. He struck out three batters. Perez came on in the seventh and threw two innings. He didn't give up a hit, struck out two and walked two batters.
