Cougar Baseball Loses Out at Georgia Highlands
On Tuesday March 15 Cleveland State baseball (15-8, 2-3) traveled to Georgia Highlands and lost in eight innings to the Chargers 14-4. The Cougars played Highland’s tough until the bottom of the fifth inning as the Chargers put eight runs on the board to break a 2-2 tie. The Cougars slashed out nine hits on the game and the pitching staff bested the Chargers pitchers winning the strikeout game 12-9.
Catcher Ryan Stephens led Cleveland State in hitting going 3-for-3 on the day including two solo home runs in the third and fifth innings. Bryce Burkey had two hits while Jaylen Jones drove in the final two runs with a single in the seventh. Other Cougars with one hit each included Jacob Robinson, Colby Taylor and Rhett Hammontree.
Cleveland State used six pitchers with starter Bryce Jenkins striking out five in two innings and relievers Brett Varner striking out three in one inning of relief and Ben Smith striking out two in 0.2 innings.
The Cougars are back at conference play on the road at Roane State with a nine-inning game scheduled to be played on Friday March 18 and a doubleheader slated for Saturday March 19.
