KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Cleveland State Baseball traveled to Knoxville on Tuesday for a doubleheader against Pellissippi State, battling throughout the day but ultimately coming up short in both contests. In the opener, the Cougars fell 5–3 despite a strong surge in the third inning when Samuel Formby drove in all three of Cleveland State's runs. The Cougars collected nine hits in the game, with Jon Jon Read, Nolan Sergeant, and Owen Phillips each delivering multi‑hit performances. On the mound, Evan Sanders and Cade Batchelor steadied the game by combining for four scoreless innings of relief, allowing only two hits and keeping the Cougars within striking distance, but additional offense proved hard to come by.
The second game turned into an offensive thriller as Cleveland State mounted a late rally, scoring eight runs over the final three innings before narrowly falling 11–10. Nolan Sergeant launched a three‑run home run to continue his standout day, while Riley Mahan added two home runs and four RBI to power the comeback attempt. The Cougars also drew eight walks, consistently applying pressure as they clawed their way back into the contest.
Following the two competitive matchups, Head Coach Aaron Bryant praised his team's effort and resilience, saying, "We didn't get the outcomes we wanted today, but I loved the fight. We had guys step up in big spots, especially in that second game. If we bring that same energy into this weekend at home, we'll put ourselves in a great position."
Cleveland State now turns its attention to an important home series, hosting Southwest Tennessee this Friday and Saturday at noon. With conference implications on the line, the Cougars look to carry their late‑game momentum into the upcoming TCCAA showdown.
