CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Cleveland State Community College split a TCCAA doubleheader Friday at Tiger Field, dropping a 5–4 decision in Game 1 before edging Chattanooga State 4–3 in Game 2.
In the opener, Cleveland State (26–14, 18–5 TCCAA) struck first on the board in the third inning when Jordan Smith scored on a sacrifice fly by Nolan Sergeant. The Cougars took the lead in the fifth as Sergeant connected on a two-run home run that scored Jon Jon Read. Chattanooga State answered in the bottom half of the inning with a three-run home run by Ty Newton to regain the lead. Cleveland State pulled within one in the sixth as Nelson McKnight homered, but the Cougars were unable to complete the comeback.
Read went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and two stolen bases, while Sergeant drove in three runs in the game. McKnight added a home run, and Max Owens went the distance on the mound, striking out five.
Cleveland State responded in Game 2 with timely execution and strong pitching. The Cougars opened the scoring in the second inning when Samuel Formby drove in Kwade Carver on a groundout. Jon Jon Read tied the game in the third with a sacrifice fly, and after Chattanooga State regained the lead, Nelson McKnight knotted the score in the fifth with an RBI single that scored Nolan Sergeant. The deciding run came in the seventh as Sergeant crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Sergeant scored twice in the nightcap, McKnight went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Hank Adams reached base four times via walk. Parker Coe worked five innings on the mound before Evan Cope and Torrey Robinson closed it out. Robinson earned the win, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Head Coach Aaron Bryant praised the team's response.
"I liked the way we kept competing throughout the day," Bryant said. "We stayed together and found a way to win Game 2. That's an important conference split on the road."
