CLEVELAND, Tenn. — Cleveland State Community College completed a home non-conference sweep of Roane State on Tuesday, taking Game 1 by a score of 6–2 before holding on for a 10–9 win in Game 2 at Cougar Field.
In the opener, the Cougars set the tone early. Nolan Sergeant launched a two-run home run in the first inning to score Jon Jon Read, and Cleveland State added another run in the second as Nate Severance scored following aggressive baserunning. After Roane State pulled within a run in the middle innings, Kwade Carver answered with a solo home run in the fifth before Sergeant struck again in the sixth with his second two-run home run of the game to seal the win.
Sergeant drove in four runs in Game 1, while Read scored twice and Severance added a run. Cleveland State pitching limited Roane State opportunities and closed the game strong.
Game 2 featured a back-and-forth battle highlighted by a big offensive response from the Cougars. Cleveland State jumped ahead in the first inning as Nelson McKnight doubled home Evan Leonard and Read, followed by a sacrifice fly from Jaxon Humble. After Roane State surged ahead with a five-run second inning, the Cougars answered immediately.
Sergeant doubled in two runs in the second before Cleveland State erupted for three more in the third. Hunter McDonald drove in a run with a double, and Riley Mahan followed with a two-run home run to swing the momentum. Sergeant added another milestone swing in the fourth, blasting a two-run home run to give Cleveland State a 10–5 lead.
Roane State mounted a late rally, but the Cougars bullpen held on, with Torrey Robinson earning the save. Sergeant finished Game 2 with four RBIs, while Mahan and McKnight each drove in two runs. Read scored twice, and contributions came throughout the lineup, including McDonald, Humble, Drew Wood, and Leonard.
Head Coach Aaron Bryant praised his team's resilience across the doubleheader.
"I loved the way we responded in both games," Bryant said. "We jumped on them early in Game 1 and answered every challenge in Game 2. That's a complete day of baseball."
Bryant also continued to highlight Nolan Sergeant's historic season, as the sophomore added to the Cleveland State single-season home run record he broke earlier in the week.
The Cougars wrapped up non-conference play with the sweep and will enjoy a bye weekend before resuming TCCAA action.
